Introducing Art & History@Web: Interviewing notable Art & History bloggers

September 6, 2010

William-Adolphe Bouguereau's Art & Literature(1867)

When the idea to start my own art+history blog dawned, my first task was searching the web for existing blogs that covered the art and history of The Renaissance and Baroque. I must admit -  I was surprised by what I saw! Coming from a background of writing at tech sites, where there are literally thousands of sources to draw material from, I found that the presence of art and history online was relatively esoteric and low profile. Had I found a site that did everything I had intended to do with 3PP, I would gladly have subscribed to it and never bothered doing my own site. Luckily for me, this was not the case!

It has been over a year since this research started, and in the course of that time I have encountered many wonderful bloggers, some whom are professional art historians and classicists, authors etc, plus others whose writing is born of a deep personal fascination with their topics, despite their occupations being in unrelated fields(I count myself among these!)

Hence, in this new feature at 3PP we will be meeting the people behind some of the most notable humanities related blogs on the web. By doing this I hope to not only spread the word about some great art and history related blogs and sites, but also give an insight into the remarkable people behind these. We will explore their passion for the topic they write about, as well invite their ideas on what they see as the future of humanities on the web

What I think we will find is a large diversity in motivation and outlook, but a common purpose - the sharing of knowledge and experiences related to art and history.

Up first will be U.S art historian Monica Bowen. Her amazing blog Alberti's Window, was one I came across a few months after I had started 3PP. Even though I myself have been reading and writing about the Renaissance for over 20 years, I am perpetually amazed by Monica's ability to uncover wonderful new things on topics I imagined myself intimately familiar with. Her blog is an absolute must-read for any fan of art history.

If you would like to recommend someone for an interview, or be involved yourself, please contact me via the email listed in my profile.

What a great feature! It's always fun to learn about other bloggers and this makes it easy to find the good ones. As always, your site is a font of both wisdom and beauty!

Thanks Vicky! I am very excited about this feature.

I have always been fascinated to learn more about the people behind wonderful things, whether it is a painting, book or blog.

Also, I'm glad you liked the (minor) cosmetic changes to 3PP. I needed a larger posting area but did not want to lose the feel of the place.

Kind Regards

This is such a great idea. I look forward to "meeting" other art history bloggers through this feature on your site. I'm very pleased that I get to participate. I'll start looking for others for you to interview!

I think it's a good idea but are you going to actually interview Monica Bowen, or just provide a link to her website?

Hi Frank!

No Giorgionesque mystery here...Interview indeed means interview! Monica has kindly answered 10 questions for me - which will be posted within a couple of days.

They will be presented in the same style as my other interviews which you can reach from the Q&A links on the left side of the page.

Kind regards
H
